Yesterday was a typical day in my working life, for several reasons...
• It started with Morning Prayer with colleagues in one of our Churches at 8:30am, and at the end of the day I left another Church at 9:45pm.
(I am not moaning about this, I am writing it to demonstrate that the
view that vicars work just Sunday mornings, couldn't be further from
the truth. In reality, we work 6 days a week, with several days a week going form 8:30am-9:30pm, and get about 4 weekends off a year. This means you have to train yourself to not feel guilty about taking an hour or two off within the day if you can)
• It ranged from taking services, a Bible Study, talking to children at a local school, visiting someone terminally ill, planning a Youth Group session, driving people around, etc.
Indeed I shared some of the day with a lady in our congregation who has had quite a week, with her Christening, Confirmation, and first Communion..and it was wonderful to be able to share this joyous journey with her.
• It was filled with wonderful, sometimes strange and funny, interactions with wonderful people!...E.G.
♢ *Rummaging through the Church draws*
Member of the congregation: 'George, what are you looking for?!'
Me: 'My tin opener. I left it at Church and yesterday had to open my tin of tuna with a spoon!'
Member of the congregation: *laughs* 'That's hilarious!!' *slight pause and still laughing* 'I mean, it's actually probably really dangerous..but still it's also really hilarious!!!' *later* 'Why a spoon?!'
Me: 'I saw it on the internet, it said it would take 30 seconds, but it took me more like 30 minutes!!'
♢ I'm in a car park, leaning out of my car window as various
members of the congregation come up to me, leading me to announce,'Maybe I should do more of my ministry through a car window!'
♢ Member of the congregation: 'What's that between my legs? Oh, it's garlic bread!' HAHAHA!!!
